Failure – and the art of chasing success

Failure – and the art of chasing success
‘We spend most of our time and energy chasing success, such that we have little left over for thinking and feeling, being and relating. As a result, we fail in the deepest possible way. We fail as human beings.
There is a book written by Dr Neel Burton “The Art of Failure - The Anti Self-Help Guide”. ( my namesake, disclaimer - no relationship ;))  ..... I found the title very interesting and very deep and meaningful.
I have not read the book but would like to read it soon …..

From my childhood I have struggled with this concept of ‘success’ and ‘failure’. It makes my head spin when I try to understand it. A child in my 5th grade class would be considered ‘successful’ when he would rank first or second (in those days and in country where I grew up) we would be given relative ranking in classrooms.
But, wait a minute, I would think - on the other side of the coin, my parents would say that it is best to be modest; it is best to take care of others needs rather than fulfilling personal needs and wishes and so on. So what about the other kid in my class who is going to rank the 20th or 22nd, why do I have to beat him and get a better ranking than him ?
If it is still confusing for me now …imagine how confusing it would have been for a 10 year old!!

Destiny or Free Will ? …..thinking of galaxy collisions today ….

Destiny or Free Will ?
This question has come up in our minds time and again.

I was recently reading an article about Galaxies and that triggered this question again in my mind!

The article was about our galaxy ( The Milky Way)  is on a path and destined (!) to collide with another galaxy ( The Andromeda) …......it is our destiny ( right !!??!!)…....although the collision will occur about 4 billion years from now!

To try and understand from a perspective of the number of stars in each galaxy:
-          Our galaxy contains ( according to scientists !) about  three hundred billion stars , that is eleven zeros after 3.  Our sun is one star on the outer edges of our galaxy.
-          The other galaxy the Andromeda is supposed to be home for about one trillion stars
The impact obviously unknown but it is our DESTINY – correct?

There is a lot of details in terms of assumptions , thoughts and predictions on this available. One of the outcomes is that the ‘Solar System’ might be thrown out of  both and the combined galaxies into some space between galaxies !!!ooops!!

The good thing is ( or the bad thing !) is that by the time that the two galaxies collide, the surface of the Earth will have already become far too hot for liquid water to exist, ending all terrestrial life, which is currently estimated to occur in about 1.4 billion years due to gradual bloating and expansion of the Sun.

So if All life will end on earth anyway in about a billion years and humans we can estimate most likely will be eliminated much earlier than that ….why worry!
But – that brought me to the question of  Destiny or Free Will !!!

To be continued……

Bollywood movie with female only lead role - no other stars - but huge success!

Recently saw a new Bollywod release, movie Kahaani, and one thing came to strike me as this is the only Bollywood movie that I can recall with female only lead role - no other stars - but huge success!  both from the critics as well as ticket sales and common public popularity...

The main lead role is a female role and there are no other major roles or stars in the movie.  Vidya Balan did a wonderful job in the lead role.  She gets full credit for that, but the story / script also has a huge role to play in this. The suspense is always there throughout the film and I would think the credit definitely goes to the story/script writer in this case.

Vidya Balan in the lead role as Vidya (aka Bidya in  bangla) does an amazing job blending completely into the character. The realistic shots on location also makes this movie very interesting especially to one who has never seen Kolkata or most of common Indian streets...

I was surprised to hear superstar Big B  Amitabh Bachchan  singing Rabindra Sangeet in the end.  He did a wonderful job singing it. The pronunciation had certain hindi accent and could have been polished a bit but Mr Bachchan as always is an amazing performer and I think he is a wonderful and gifted singer as well !!! His singing seems to be improving every time..
